Greenleaf Family Center has served thousands of children, individuals and families for 100 years. The following are some of their stories:

When “Angie” entered the Teenage Parent Program, she was 17 years old, in the 11th grade, and pregnant. She had reservations about parenting due to her family history and support system. She participated in individual and support group services and Young Parents Club to assist her in preparing for and adjusting to parenting and developing positive life plans. Angie is now an active, positive parent of a healthy, happy toddler, lives independently and is pursuing nurses’ training.

A mother of three is needed major surgery which required a sufficient amount of time away from work. Naturally, she fell behind on her utilities and mortgage and was on the brink of foreclosure. In desperate need of reliable transportation to ensure employment, she contacted our Ways to Work Car Loan Program and was approved for a loan. During the loan interview, she decided it was time for a fresh start. She cut up all of her credit cards and vowed to enroll in a debt management program the moment she left the interview. She is now current on her mortgage payments and has stayed on track with her debt management plan, and will be debt free in no time.

When “Mike”, a 12 year old Deaf boy, came in the office he spoke broken English and, like his hearing parents did not know sign language. Due to his lack of language skills, people could not understand Mike, he was easily frustrated and often angry. Mike was provided with a deaf mentor and began to express himself through facial expression, body language and gesturing. His parents began a sign language class and at the end of the school year, Mike really understood the structure of the English language. He finally has the ability to communicate in sign language and uses it more often. Mike enjoys talking about sports, video games and movies. He will not let the mentor/advocate talk until he finishes his story!
