Financial Services for Families

Our Financial Services for Families Programs help families move toward financial self-sufficiency and retain employment.

Pre-Bankruptcy Counseling

Greenleaf Family Center offers Pre-Bankruptcy Counseling. A confidential one-on-one interview on budgeting and money management lasts approximately 1½ hours and costs $50.00

At the end of the interview, you will be issued a Certificate of Counseling which is required to file for bankruptcy protection.

Post Bankruptcy Counseling

Greenleaf Family Center offers Post-Bankruptcy Counseling. This is a classroom setting to cover topics such as budget development, money management, wise use of credit, and general consumer information.

The class session is 2 hours in length and the fee is $50.00. You will also be given the opportunity to purchase the book “A Roadmap to Personal Financial Health Following Bankruptcy” published by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling for $21.95.

At the conclusion of the class, you will be issued a Certificate of Course Completion which is required by the court for your debts to be discharged. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.

Ways to Work

The Ways to Work Program, which began in 1996, provides small, low interest loans to help families purchase automobiles for travel to and from work.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be a resident of Summit, Portage, or Medina County
  • Have no other source for a loan
  • Have a household income no greater than 80% of the area’s median income
  • Be employed at least 20 hours per week with six months consecutive employment
  • Be a custodial parent of one or more minor children
  • Utilities must be up-to-date with no single utility having a balance greater than $500
  • No vehicle repossessions (voluntary or involuntary)
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to make monthly payments

Loans are available to qualified applicants regardless of race, color, religion, sex, marital status, veteran status, or age (provided that the applicant has the capacity to enter into a binding contract), because all or part of the applicant’s income is derived from any public assistance program, or because applicant has in good faith exercised any right under the Consumer Credit Protection Act.

Auto Repair Assistance Program

Do you need assistance with car repairs? Greenleaf Family Center, in collaboration with Summit County Department of Job & Family Services, continues to offer an Auto Repair Assistance Program. The intent of this program is to provide financial and professional assistance for car repairs, helping parents of minor children remain employed.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Summit County Resident
  • At least 18 yrs old
  • Custody of minor child
  • Currently employed 3 months prior to application
  • Working at least 20 hrs every week, at minimum wage or equivalent
  • Vehicle involved must be main source of transportation for household
  • Vehicle registered to applicant
  • Meet income guidelines
  • Valid Liability Insurance
  • Valid Ohio Driver License
  • Auto loan payments must be current (if applicable)
  • Attend Vehicle Maintenance & Money Management Workshops

Credit Happens Workshops

Monthly workshops are held to discuss various credit topics and alternate ways to manage them. We’ll show you ways to set a budget, cut down expenses and find out exactly where your money goes every month.

A typical workshop teaches credit basics, budgeting, credit reports and banking. Pre-registration is required.

Credit Counseling Services

Credit counseling helps people cope with financial hardships. More and more people are facing financial troubles, often due to unforeseen circumstances.

Our Debt Management Plan serves the dual role of helping YOU repay your debts and helping creditors receive the money owed them. If you are troubled with past due bills and, we’d like to help!

Financial Problems are often caused by:

  • Loss of Income
  • Medical Expenses
  • Overspending
  • Financial Emergencies
  • High Interest Rates

Have you been:

  • Late with payments or unable to make full payments?
  • Receiving threatening letters or calls from creditors?
  • Using loans or credit cards to make ends meet?
  • Considering bankruptcy?

Our Debt Management Plan will work to establish a payment plan between you and your creditors that:

  • May reduce minimum payments and interest, and stop late or over limit fees
  • Allows you to make one lump sum payment for all unsecured debt
  • Pays off debt over term of the program
